The Return of Sheepskin Boots!

Whenever we want to be totally comfortable in our footwear, our sheepskin boots are our go-to shoes. They’re soft, cozy, and make stepping out of the house just a little bit easier (okay, a lot easier) on these chilly winter days! We wear our Koolaburras everywhere– they’re part of our California chic cozy style and according to VOGUE Magazine (article here), they’re officially IN STYLE and no longer fashion’s guilty pleasure. People everywhere are embracing sheepskin as the new it item in footwear. Celebrities, models, and fashionistas alike are building outfits around and we like what we see.

Vogue says “autumn’s take on traditional knitwear, plush sheepskin and a looming summer season obsessed with a bohemian spirit is bringing the classic shearling boot back into style for summer and fall 2015!” We prefer our takes on the classic – the Double Halo and the Haley Fringe Boot. Two boots with individual flare and completely boho. Celebrities and bloggers alike love their Koolaburras! We call them the Kult of Koolaburra and amongst them are bohemian trendsetters like Vanessa Hudgens, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Alessandra Ambrosio, Selena Gomez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Whitney Port, Ashley Tisdale, Ashley Green, Lauren Conrad, Natalie Suarez of Natalie off Duty and more! We like to take style tips from how they step out and style their favorite choice in sheepskin, Koolaburra.

#KultofKoolaburra: Alessandra Ambrossio

Brazilian bombshell and Victoria’s Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrossio was spotted in the Dame boot in black. Her LA winter outfit of the day is paired with boot cut boyfriend denim, a fitted grey turtle neck and gem encrusted shades. The harness adds just the right amount of edge and Western to this very California laid back ensemble! Shop the Dame here.

These may look like the shearling boots everyone and her mother has grown to love, but a hidden, 3½-inch inner wedge gives you a little extra something something. — Oprah

We’re so excited to share that our La Cienega boot made it onto Oprah’s Favorite Things 2014 list in the December issue of O, The Oprah Magazine! We love you, Oprah! She chose the boot in the Seta color way, a style that is NOW AVAILABLE online!

Recipe: The Ultimate Sandwich

(Photo courtesy of The Wild Beet blog)

This sandwich is everything. It’s more than that– it’s a complete flavor explosion. We found this recipe on one of our favorite new plant based food blogs The Wild Beet. Look, we enjoy a good steak as much as the next person, but this whole foods vegan blog has us drooling with these amazing recipe creations! So much that we tried this little number out ourselves and , well… let’s just say we have our go-to summer beach food down now. Good recipes are for sharing, so say hello to The Wild Beet’s Rainbow Bomber.

The Wild Beet’s Rainbow Bomber
1 rustic french baguette, sliced into two 6″ pieces
1/4 c pesto (recipe here)
1 small butternut squash, roasted and mashed
1 purple yam, thinly sliced
4 small purple heirloom potatoes
1 haas avocado, halved then thinly sliced
1 c baby spinach
2 tsp maple syrup
1 tbsp earth balance butter
2 tbsp veganaise
cayenne pepper, garlic powder, paprika
extra virgin olive oil
salt & pepper to taste
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Rinse the butternut squash, dry, then place into the oven whole. Roast for 30-40 minutes or until tender when poked. Slice open, gut the seeds, and scoop contents into a large mixing bowl, add 1 tbsp earth balance butter, 2 tsp maple syrup, and salt to taste. Mix and Mash together until smooth. Set aside.
Set the purple yams inside a large mixing bowl. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil over the yams, ladd a few grinds of salt (I use himalayan), then evenly distribute the salt and extra virgin olive oil amongst the yams. Place each yam on a baking sheet (each in their own spot).
In another mixing bowl, drizzle extra virgin olive oil over the heirloom potatoes and lightly season them with the garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and a light sprinkle of cayenne. I don’t use measurements for these spices, as I know my palette. Use your judgement and add the spices to your liking. Rub oil, spices and potatoes together evenly. Transfer each seasoned potato slice to a baking sheet (each in their own spot). Depending on your oven, cook for about 12-15 minutes, or until tender and slightly crispy at the skin.
Place the bread in the oven and lightly toast for 3-5 minutes (depending on your oven). Remove when ready.
It’s time to set up your Bombers! On the bottom half of the baguette spread pesto over entire slice generously and place 3 slices of avocado on top evenly throughout the bread. Add 3 slices of the yams on top of the avocado layer, followed by 2 heirloom potatoes with a few leaves of baby spinach on top.  On your top slice spread the maple butternut squash evenly throughout the slice, add a light layer of veganaise on top, then finish off with some freshly ground pepper. Put the sandwich together, take a sit, sit down, and strike up the band.

Thursday Movie Night: Dazed & Confused

One of our favorite cult classics and coming of age movies from the 1990s has to be Dazed & Confused. Are we right? A young Matthew McConaughey, Milla Jovovich, and baby faced Ben Afleck? Yes, please! The 70s style and humor in this movie have set the tone for timeless quoting. Who could forget Matthew’s infamous “Alright, alright, alright!”?

Now, it’s only appropriate to snack to the death with this movie. (Insert stoner joke here). So, we’re sharing this ultimate brownie recipe in proper Dazed and Confused fashion.

Dazed & Confused Munchie Brownies

1/2 c vegetable oil

1 c white sugar

1 t vanilla extract

2 eggs

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Prehear oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×9 baking pan.

In a medium sized bowl, mix together the oil, sugar, and vanilla. Beat in eggs. Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt; gradually stir into the egg mixture until well blended. Stir in walnuts, if desired. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the brownie begins to pull away from edges of pan. Let cool on a wire rack before cutting into squares and enjoy!

Kult of Koolaburra: Feral Creature

We love Eugenie Grey of Feral Creature. So much that if you recall, she took over our Instagram account for Coachella a couple of months back! What do we love the most though? The way she styles Koolaburra and makes it her own with her edgy rocker babe look. Mega babe, mega member of the Kult of Koolaburra.

Here are some of our fave photos from her Sail editorial on Feral Creature:

Summer4Ever: The Weekend Round Up

There’s nothing like summer in California. The surf is high, people are laying out on the sand, cocktails on the beach, and the most  memorable sunsets on the pier with your closest friends. Here at Koolaburra HQ in sunny Santa Barbara, we make it a regular to walk over to the beach even if it’s for a little while for some necessary wave time. But what’s summertime without killer tunes to accompany those memories? Nada. So, we’ve created a weekly summer series of playlists to help you along with your fun in the sun.  First up, #summer4ever playlist no.1 featuring some tracks off of our latest obsession, Lana Del Rey’s new album Ultraviolence! Some other tracks include Bleachers, FKA Twiggs, Blood Orange, Sky Ferreria, and Best Coast!

Add us on Spotify (@koolaburra) and listen to the playlist: SUMMER4EVER #1
